An accident involving three cars in Poway Wednesday afternoon sent four patients to the hospital, two in critical condition.
The accident on Twin Peaks Road between Community Road and Silverset happened at about 2:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire Department.
A green Ford Escort driven by a 17-year-old male was traveling westbound on Twin Peaks Road. The vehicle was also carrying three teenage passengers, ages 15 to 17, deputies said.
For unknown reasons, the driver of the Escort swerved over the center line into eastbound traffic, hitting a Toyota Prius driven by a male adult, officials said.
The Escort then slid sideways into a Ford F150 truck driven by an adult female and her 12-year-old sister.
The teen driver of the Escort and his 15-year-old brother were critically injured in the crash, both sustaining major head trauma, deputies confirmed.
Sheriffs said one of the brothers has a blood clot disorder, which exacerbated the injury.
The brothers were transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital via helicopter.
The two other teen passengers in the Escort and the drivers and young passenger of the Prius and F150 sustained minor injuries and were treated at Pomerado Hospital and Palomar Hospital. They were later released, deputies confirmed.
A portion of Twin Peaks Road was closed following the accident, but one westbound lane remained open from Community Road.
The investigation is ongoing and the names of the critically injured teenagers have not been confirmed by officials. They are students at Poway High School, deputies said.
A staff member from Poway High School posted the following message on her Facebook page Wednesday night following the accident:
“The question once again is, "when will we catch a break?" Please keep our Titans in your thoughts and prayers: Unfortunately, another tragedy at PHS. Four of our students were hurt today in a car crash.”
Ed. Note: An earlier version of this article stated four cars were involved in the accident. Deputies later revised the information and confirmed three cars were involved, the Ford Escort, the Toyota Prius and the Ford F150.
