Post Office for Procrastinators up for Sale

Midway Post Office is looking for a buyer

For years cars lined up on Midway drive to drop off last minute tax returns.  At one point the entire street was used to collect from late night filers.

But times have changed.

The traffic is way down on April 15 and now the former main post office is up for sale.

"Mail volume has dropped so much that really the facility is under utilized and we just don't need it anymore," said Eva Jackson with the U.S. Postal Service.

A bad economy and Internet communication have taken a big bite out of the postal business.

One idea on the table is to cut back delivery one day a week.  Another is to close unnecessary postal buildings.

The main post office used to be in downtown San Diego before it moved to Midway in 1972. In 1993 a new facility was built in Carmel Mt. Ranch. Now the Margaret L. Sellers Processing and Distribution Center handles nearly 10 times the volume of the Midway facility.

But while the Midway center is up for sale people in the area won't be without a post office.

"If the potential new owner is agreeable we would love to keep our retail services there, if not, we'll find another location in that area," said Jackson.
