Police Search for Peeping Tom Accused of Spying on Woman in La Mesa Macy's Fitting Room

A 20-year-old woman says a peeping tom stuck a phone camera under the door of a fitting room at a La Mesa Macy's while she was changing.

The incident allegedly occurred Thursday at the Macy's located in Grossmont Center.

Shelbi Ann Evans told NBC 7 she had gone shopping by herself. She was using Facetime with her family to show them the clothing she was trying on in the fitting room. When she looked in the mirror, she noticed a hand reaching under the door.

The hand was holding a phone, pointed in her direction.

"I just felt like really overwhelmed," Evans said. "Like, oh my gosh, is this really happening to me right now?"

She spoke up, and the person pulled their hand from the dressing room, Evan said.

"I decided to take a deep breath, and I got out, and then you just tell someone right away," Evans said. "And I said, 'Excuse me' and they walked off and so, maybe someone saw them walk out."

Evans immediately reported the incident.

The La Mesa Police Department (LMPD) is in the process of looking at surveillance footage as part of their investigation. Officers are asking anyone with information to contact them.

Macy's released this statement about the incident:

"Macy's condemns this type of improper behavior. The safety of our customers and associates is our top priority. As this is a police matter, we are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation."

At this point, police have not released a description of the suspect. Evans was not hurt.

As of Saturday around noon, the LMPD said the investigation is ongoing. Police are reviewing surveillance video from Macy's, trying to get more information on the suspect.

Evans was able to give police a specific time window of the incident, so investigators are narrowing down footage of who was in the store at the time.

At this time, no arrests have been made.
