Police Officers Kill Man in Clairemont

Woman said nephew threatened to stab her

A man was killed by San Diego police officers early Saturday morning in North Clairemont after they say he lunged at an officer with a kitchen knife.

The aunt of the suspect, 26, called police and reported her nephew threatened to stab her with a knife, and responding officers arrived at the 5000 block of Dawne Street at about 1:23 a.m., said Lt. Kevin Rooney of the San Diego Police Department.

Officers found the suspect beneath sheets inside a rear bedroom, and after asking him to vacate the room, he turned back the covers and revealed a large knife, according to a police report.

The suspect then reportedly lunged at an officer, and two officers fired an undisclosed number of shots.

The suspect died at the scene at 1:55 a.m. He had a 3-year-old child.

The officers who fired their weapons are described as 32-year and 16-year veterans of the department.
