Police Investigate Murder at Psychiatric Hospital

The victim died at 10:40 p.m. on Saturday, March 24

Detectives are investigating the murder of a patient at San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital in the Midway District, according to San Diego Police Department.

Just before 3 p.m. on March 17, officers were dispatched to a trauma center to evaluate the injuries of a patient injured at the psychiatric hospital located at 3853 Rosecrans St.

The victim, 53-year-old Robert King, was taken to the hospital with cardiac arrest, suffering from severe head injuries. Paramedics responded to a medical aid request, began CPR and transported King to the trauma center. 

King’s roommate, Bart Schafer, 32, initially reported to hospital staff that King had fallen.

SDCPH staff called police and asked that officers evaluate King’s injuries. Officers responded to the trauma center and SDCPH, investigated the incident and arrested Schafer for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

King died at 10:40 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.

Schafer was arraigned on March 21 in San Diego Superior Court and is currently in custody at San Diego County Jail. Schafer’s charge has been upgraded to murder.
