A rare pod of sperm whales was spotted Wednesday afternoon off the coast of Long Beach.
Capt. Dan Salas of Harbor Breeze Cruises told NBC LA the pod of 16 sperm whales were laying on the surface of the water in the Catalina Channel. "It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen," Salas told NBC LA. He's been a sea captain for 30 years.
"We hardly ever hear about sperm whales in the Catalina Channel...it was a once in a lifetime sighting viewing such a big pod of sperm whales. Occasionally we see killer whales, lots of blue whales...the life off the coast of Long Beach is incredible. But we have never seen this amount of sperm whales, it was absolutely amazing," Salas added.
