Train Strikes, Kills Person in Little Italy

Deputies will investigate the collision between the Amtrak train and a person

Train service into downtown San Diego was delayed after a fatal incident involving a pedestrian at Grape Street.

San Diego Fire Rescue crews were called to the section of track in Little Italy just after 10 a.m.

San Diego police have confirmed a pedestrian was killed in an accident involving an Amtrak train.

Deputies later identified the victim only as a 45-year-old man.

β€œIt seems this was an apparent suicide,” said San Diego County Sheriff's Sgt. Anthony O’Boyle.

North County Transit posted an update to its customers via Twitter alerting them to possible delays because of the police activity.

Since the train was stopped by the incident, traffic was backed up from California Street onto Hawthorn and Grape Streets toward Interstate 5.

The gridlock prompted San Diego police to issue a SigAlert at 10:40 a.m.
