A family in Colorado is mourning the loss of a locally based Marine.

Highlands Ranch, Colo., native, Max W. Donahue, 23, was injured Wednesday in combat operations in the Southern Helmand province of Afghanistan. The corporal died Saturday, according to military officials.

The 23-year-old dog handler was a member of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, which deployed in the spring, reported the North County Times. He joined the Marines in July 2006, the paper reported.

Officals said 1,220 servicemen and -women have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of the war.
