Pedestrian Hit, Killed by at Least One Car in El Cajon

Caller said someone was hit by one car and run over by another.

A man died on impact after being hit by at least two cars in El Cajon Thursday, police said.

The accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday night at the 800 block of Avocado Street, between Lindell Avenue and Renette Avenue.

The victim, 57-year-old Charles Peralta of El Cajon, was apparently trying to cross the dark street when he was struck head-on by a white SUV heading northbound, then hit again by a gray Toyota Camry heading southbound.

Peralta was thrown 30 feet, though the debris spread much further. Witnesses said the victim was hard to see, as he was wearing dark clothing and crossed between street lights.

He was pronounced dead on the scene from trauma to the head and torso.

Luz Alarcon was driving southbound on Avocado street toward the northbound SUV at the moment it struck and killed the man crossing the street.

“I'm a little shaken up,” Alarcon said. “It's hard, I saw him there and he was already gone, so I feel bad for his family.”

Police said there were no alcohol or drugs involved in the crash. The driver of the SUV was released without being charged with a crime.

Witnesses said this is the third pedestrian-involved car accident in the past few years and that drivers do not follow the 40 mile-per-hour speed limit.
