Pedestrian Using Camera Phone Fatally Hit by Train in Del Mar

A pedestrian using a camera phone near railroad tracks in Del Mar was fatally hit by a train Saturday night, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed.

The pedestrian was struck by a northbound BNSF train at Coast Boulevard just north of 13th Street around 9:13 p.m., Deputy M. Levine said in a statement.

The train was traveling at about 40 miles per hour when the engineer saw three pedestrian trespassers standing near the railroad tracks, Levine said. One trespasser “was utilizing the camera on his mobile device near the tracks” and did not respond to the train’s warning horn and lights, and was struck, succumbing to his wounds, Levine added.

No other information was immediately available.
