The North County Times has laid off 25 reporters and editors, citing an ongoing slump in advertising revenue.

The paper said that newsroom cuts reduced the editorial team by about 20 percent. The additional cuts were across the paper, including in the advertising and circulation departments.

Publisher Peter York said the layoffs were needed to keep the northern San Diego County paper viable.

Lee Enterprises, a Davenport, Iowa, company that owns the newspaper, last week said preliminary earnings dropped 73 percent in the fiscal fourth quarter.

  • Mandy Wednesday, Nov 19 at 10:37 AM FLAG COMMENT This paper is already on the borderline with me due to their poor editing and uninteresting stories along with a lack of local coverage. This might be the final nail in my subscription coffin.
  • Anonymous Wednesday, Nov 19 at 8:28 AM FLAG COMMENT Newspapers, magazines are wasteful resources are usually out of date 1 second after they are printed. Digital media is the wave of the future. Once traditional newspapers realize that print media is an archaic carryover from the 20th century and adapt to digital media, they will be better off.
  • nitpicky Wednesday, Nov 19 at 8:24 AM FLAG COMMENT Outer headline: "The North County Times has lays off..." Apparently 7/39 has laid off their proofreader as well :)
  • kaykay22 Wednesday, Nov 19 at 7:52 AM FLAG COMMENT I know they already fired their proofreaders a long time ago!!
  • T A Masters Wednesday, Nov 19 at 7:40 AM FLAG COMMENT That is what happens when Davenport, Iowa publishes North San Diego County News. Sad for all those losing their jobs. We are not Local anymore.
