Padres Punchless In Colorado

Shut Out At Coors Field By Rockies Rookie

It doesn't matter if the Padres are playing in Coors Field, the greatest run scoring mecca on the planet. It probably would not matter if they were playing in a ballpark on the moon. If Eric Stults is starting for them, San Diego's offense is probably not going to score any runs.

The Friars fell to the Rockies 3-0 Friday night in Denver. Stults, despite allowing just three runs in 6.1 innings (a very good effort in that yard), took the loss because his hitters could not muster more than three hits off rookie lefty Tyler Matzek.

Matzek's 3-hit shutout was nothing short of masterful in the mile-high air. In fact, it's only the eighth time in the Rockies' 22-year history one of their starters has allowed 3 or fewer hits in a complete game effort.

Stults has now started 28 games this season. The Padres have scored zero or one run for him 15 times. To quote Austin Powers:

"Ouch, baby. Very ouch."
