After a seven game road trip, the Padres were back in San Diego Tuesday night to host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of a three game series. Right handed pitcher Jarred Cosart was on the hill for San Diego but left in the fourth inning with a hamstring strain.
Friars first baseman, Wil Myers got things started with an RBI in the bottom of the third which scored center fielder Travis Jankowski. That was Myers 22nd hit of the season and his 10th RBI. That got the Padres on the board to take a 1-0 lead.
The Diamondbacks jumped ahead in the top of the fourth inning driving in three runs. However, it was in the top of the fifth inning that things got out of control. The Padres could not put a stop to Arizona. Outfielder Yasmany Tomas nailed a three run homer to give the Diamondbacks a 7-1 lead.
The Arizona bats didn’t stop there; they added four more runs and put themselves at a healthy advantage with an 11-1 lead in the ninth inning. With the Padres bullpen struggling, skipper Andy Green replaced righty Christian Bethancourt with shortstop Erik Aybar on the mound. In his first career pitching experience, Aybar forced a ground out from Arizona catcher Chris Herrmann to end the inning.
There was another first in this game. Padres Catcher Luis Torrens got his first career hit when he scored on an RBI single to center field in the ninth. That would make it 11-2 in favor of the Diamondbacks and that was the final score. The Padres face the Diamondbacks in game two of the series on Wednesday April 19th at Petco Park.
