Padres Drop First Game of Short Set against Oakland

Friars fall to A’s in Extra Innings

The boys are back in town! The San Diego Padres returned to America’s finest city after a 10-game road trip to start a short series against the Oakland Athletics. The first of two games from Petco Park had Eric Lauer on the mound for San Diego Tuesday night. The lefty had a solid performance on the hill. Lauer worked through six innings allowing just three hits and no earned runs. He finished the night with seven strikeouts. Unfortunately, the rookie pitcher had little offensive support.

The game was tied at one run apiece in the second inning when Raffy Lopez hit an RBI double to right field that plated Franmil Reyes and gave the Padres the 2-1 lead. That’s all the offense we would see from either team until the ninth inning.

The visitors tied the game again when Stephen Piscotty hit a solo home run, his tenth of the season, to left field. It was Padres closer Brad Hand who served up the 94 mph fastball to Oakland’s outfielder. Hand has come in clutch time and again this season for the Padres, but in this occasion he blew the save.

The A’s added two more runs in the 10th inning with a two run homer courtesy of Jed Lowrie and that sealed the victory 4-2 for Oakland. The second and last game of the series is on Wednesday June 20 at 12:40 p.m. from Petco Park.
