PB Planning Group to Recommend Vacation Rental Permits

The Pacific Beach Planning Group voted 10-1 Tuesday approving to recommend a permit process when it comes to operating short-term vacation rentals in San Diego.

The group also revised part of the recommendation to prohibit vacation rentals in single family or RS zones that are for less than 30 days, according to Jim Krokee, Chairman of Vacation Rentals Committee. That revision passed in a 6-4 vote.

Hundreds of community members packed a room at the Pacific Beach Taylor Library. Some people had to stand outside the door and others had to sit on the floor. The planning group heard public comment before they made their decisions.

The vast majority of public comment came from people who support short-term vacation rentals in Pacific Beach and other parts of the city. They touted the positive economic impact, the benefits of the extra income and other things.

The opposition to vacation rentals came from some members of the planning committee. They were frustrated by the noise created and overall impact on livability. They said these rentals are negatively impacting the fabric of their community.

The passed revised recommendation is scheduled to go before the San Diego's Smart Growth and Land Use Committee April 22. Krokee says that meeting is open to the public.
