Overnight Closure of South Bay Expressway

The South Bay Expressway, also known as State Route 125 toll road, will be closed in both directions on Monday April 24, starting at 9 p.m., through Tuesday April 25, until 5 a.m., between Birch Road and Olympic Parkway in east Chula Vista.

Motorists traveling in the area are encouraged to avoid the area or take an alternate route. A detour will be set up via Birch Road, Eastlake Parkway, Olympic Parkway and La Media Road.

Residents adjacent to the toll road can expect intermittent construction-related noise and lighting.

The reason for the closure is so that crews can work on the installation of false work temporary wood structures used to support the foundation of a new transit guideway bridge for the future South Bay Rapid service.

Additional overnight lane closures are planned from Tuesday through Thrusday, April 27. The work schedule is subject to change depending on weather conditions.

SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments) says that when completed, the new bridge will allow transit vehicles to cross the South Bay Expressway and reduce travel time. The bridge will also accommodate people walking and biking, while connecting residents and communities west of the toll road with retail and entertainment on the east side.

SANDAG says that the South Bay Rapid project is a $128 million investment to create a new, frequent, and reliable transit choice to connect residents to employment and activity centers in Downtown San Diego and South County.

The 26-mile Rapid route will run between the Otay Mesa Port of Entry and downtown via a dedicated transit guideway along East Palomar Street and Eastlake Parkway in Chula Vista.
