Man Accused of Killing Grandmother, Uncle in Otay Mesa Mobile Home Park

The bodies of Donna Chatterfield, 78, and Kenneth Chatterfield, 54, were found stabbed inside a home at the Rancho Chula Vista mobile home park

A San Diego man accused of killing two relatives in a violent stabbing had a history of mental illness and illegal drug use, and had been released from jail just hours before the alleged double murder, court documents show.

On Monday, a roommate found the bodies of Donna Chatterfield, 78, and Kenneth Chatterfield, 54, inside the Chatterfield's mobile home in the 1000 block of Beyer Way, in Chula Vista.

San Diego Police were called to the home just before 4 p.m. Hours later, investigators arrested 29-year-old Raymond Chatterfield at a fast food restaurant about a block from crime scene.

He was booked on two counts of murder in the deaths of his grandmother and uncle, police said.

Raymond, who has a history of arrests for possession and use of methamphetamine, was most recently sentenced to 90 days custody for violating a restraining order meant to keep him away from Donna.

With credit for time served and other jail time credits, Raymond was released from jail some time Monday.

San Diego judges issued at least three orders designed to protect homicide victim Donna from her grandson.

In a separate request for a domestic violence restraining order made in July of 2013, Donna described an incident in which her grandson had allegedly "... become so wild and belligerent that while he was yelling at me, he grabbed my glasses off of my face, threw them, and spit in my face.โ€

She said she was โ€œ...so frightened and upset that I couldnโ€™t dial my phoneโ€ฆ

"I am afraid next time he might strike me, push me or otherwise hurt me," she told the judge.

Donna told the judge that her grandson had lived with her all of his life, and took โ€œvarious (psychiatric) medications for psychological and behavioral problems.โ€

In the documents, Donna also describes a June 2007 incident in which she allegedly suffered bruises and a chipped tooth. According those documents, police arrested Raymond Chatterfield after that incident.

Raymond appeared at the August 2013 hearing but there is no indication he denied any of the allegations made by his grandmother.

Other court records reviewed by NBC 7 News confirm that on April 7, 2015 Raymond was ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from his grandmother and have no written or electronic communication with her.

Court records show Raymond violated that order on October 16.

Another, identical "stay away" order was issued against him on October 20, and a third protective order was issued November 5.

That order, designed to protect Donna from her grandson, was in effect when he allegedly stabbed her and his uncle to death.

Raymond was charged with felony elder abuse in June 2007, court records show. He pleaded guilty and the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor.

Documents filed in a mental health proceeding reveal that Raymond was arrested and charged with illegal possession of methamphetamine in July 2014. Raymond claimed to be a Navy Seal and the son of a member of the rock band Slayer at the time of his arrest, according to the documents.
