O'side Fire Rings May Have to Move

Fire rings near Oceanside's city pier will likely be moved elsewhere on the beach after people living in a nearby condominium complex complained that smoke from fire rings was making them sick, the North County Times reported.

"It's kind of tough at night when the fires get going and I have trouble breathing," said Bill Wilson, a resident of the San Miguel condominiums, who said the smoke aggravates his asthma.

At the urging of Councilman Jerry Kern, the Oceanside City Council in a 3-1 vote Wednesday instructed staffers to determine if the rings can be moved without running afoul of the California Coastal Commission, the paper reported.

Councilwoman Esther Sanchez, a member of the Coastal Commission, said the commission has jurisdiction over the fire rings because they are considered a statewide asset.
