One Life Vest Per Person: U.S. Coast Guard

As part of National Boat Week, U.S. Coast Guard wants to reminds San Diego boaters of safety on the water

The U.S. Coast Guard held boating safety demonstrations Friday to remind boaters about safety and responsibility.

California has the second highest recreational boating fatality in the country.

Last year alone --California reported 365 accidents that lead to 49 deaths, 32 of which were cause by drowning.

Two weeks ago, a father and his sons were pulled from the Pacific Ocean after their boat capsized in the water. The three men survived after they were rescued by a nearby charter fishing boat.

Friday’s event, held as part of National Safe Boating Week which begins Monday, was a kickoff to the summer boating season.

The USCG wants to stress the importance of wearing your life vest.

“Everybody should have at least one life vest for everybody on board, if you have children on board you should have children’s life vests and it should be properly fitted,” said Rey Armstrong, a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteer.

The Coast guard also wants to make sure that the fire extinguishers on board are current and properly stored and that any boat under 65 feet is carrying both day and night signal flares.
