One person was killed and two others were injured when several vehicles crashed on an East County freeway Tuesday, authorities said.

A woman driving a Ford Explorer was traveling northbound on State Route 125 near Jamacha Road when she lost control and swerved into the southbound lanes at about 8:40 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

"She rolled through the center divide and into oncoming traffic," said CHP spokesperson Brian Pennings.

The Explorer crashed head-on into a PT Cruiser. "According to witnesses, the Explorer was rolling into the air and came to rest and landed on top of the PT Cruiser as it was traveling southbound," said Pennings.

The Explorer then collided with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Jeep Wrangler driven by a 32-year old Border Patrol agent.

The CHP reported that woman driving the Ford Explorer died at the scene. The woman driving the PT Cruiser was airlifted to a hospital and the CBP officer who suffered minor injuries was taken by ground ambulance to a hospital.

Emergency crews had to extricate the drivers of the Explorer and PT Cruiser but the CBP officer managed to get himself out of his vehicle.

SR 125 southbound was closed temporarily for the helicopter to land and pick up the driver of the PT Cruiser.
