A 26-year-old man was killed in a crash near Oceanside early Tuesday morning after the vehicle he was riding in crashed into a tree, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
The deadly accident happened just before 12:30 a.m. near South Mission Road, just north of Via Monserate.
CHP officials say a 24-year-old Fallbrook woman was driving her 2007 Toyota Corolla at an unknown speed when, for unknown reasons, she lost control of the car and veered off the road, down an embankment.
The Corolla crashed into a tree, heavily impacting the right passenger side. The driver’s passenger sustained critical injuries and died at the scene, officials said.
The woman was able to crawl up the embankment and flagged down a passing deputy for help. She suffered minor injuries and was take to Palomar Hospital.
CHP officials say the crash is under investigation, but alcohol and drugs are not believed to have played a role in the collision.
The victim’s name has not yet been released.
