USS Spruance, the newest destroyer to join the Navy’s Pacific Fleet

The newest destroyer to join the Navy’s Pacific Fleet is heading to its homeport in San Diego.

USS Spruance is scheduled to arrive at Naval Base San Diego on Monday.

The newest destroyer is powered by four gas-turbine engines and is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots, according to the U.S. Navy.

It’s a multi-mission ship with a crew of 285 Sailors and carries Tomahawk cruise missiles, a 5-inch gun, sonar systems and two helicopters.

The ship is commanded by Cmdr. Tate Westbrook.

USS Spruance is named in honor of Adm. Raymond Spruance who commanded Carrier Task Force 16 during the Battle of Midway in World War II.
