New YMCA Opens in City Heights

The biggest YMCA facility in San Diego County has now officially opened its doors.

The 53,000 square-foot Copley-Price Family YMCA on El Cajon Boulevard and Fairmont Avenue held its grand opening Saturday. The brand-new facility hopes to bridge the Kensington, City Heights and Talmadge areas.

With it comes two pools, one outdoor and one indoor, a teen center, child care, a basketball gymnasium, and a wellness center complete with exercise studios.

YMCA members will also be able to enjoy perks that are not offered at other YMCAs, such as cooking demonstrations aimed to promote healthy cooking. While membership to the facility ranges from $40 to $60, the facility won't be turning anyone away.

"We offer financial assistane to everyone who needs it," YMCA of San Diego County spokesperson Loni Lewis said. "Because we want to be a service that can help everybody."

Guests can also purchase a day pass for $20.

City leaders first broke ground at the site of what used to be a Ford dealership in October 2013. The previous YMCA building in City Heights was the area's primary facility for almost 60 years.
