New Security Restrictions, Procedures for 2016 Miramar Airshow: Colonel

The popular annual show will be held Sept. 23-25 at MCAS Miramar.

There will be new security restrictions and procedures for the Miramar Airshow this year, the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Air Station told NBC 7 San Diego in an interview Wednesday.

The popular annual show will be held Sept. 23-25 at MCAS Miramar. The hundreds of visitors driving onto the base will now face additional security measures on their way in.

“Due to the increased security environments across the country and across the world, we have made some changes," Colonel Jason Woodworth told NBC 7's Military Reporter Bridget Naso. "We're going to be requiring clear plastic bags this year for the air show. There's a number of other things were trying to institute with parking, and have some of the security checkpoints take place in the parking lots a little bit away from the flight line.”

A more detailed list of security restrictions and procedures will be released closer to the Airshow.

During last year’s Miramar Airshow, a lost backpack caused a security scare and forced the closure of a section of the Marine base after the Airshow had just ended for the day. The backpack was determined not to be a threat and the owner of the backpack came forward to claim it shortly after it was discovered in a hanger away from the flight line.

The San Diego Chargers also have a similar backpack policy and only allow people to bring items into Qualcomm Stadium in a clear plastic bags.
