San Diego Lifeguards released nearly 60 lobsters stuck in traps throughout La Jolla Cove Tuesday.
The lobsters became stuck after about 11 traps drifted into the protected reserve during heavy surf.
Guards from La Jolla Cove, La Jolla Shores and the Mission Bay Boating Safety Unit teamed up to remove the traps, which were wedged in the cove's rocks.
They used dive gear, rescue boards and a surf rescue boat to free the lobsters back into the water. The lobsters weighed up to four pounds.
A statement from the Lifeguard Union said removing traps like these is one way lifeguards can reduce pollution, save animals and get rid of dangerous ropes from swimming areas.
