Nearly 47K San Diego Customers Lose Power

Tens of thousands of residents and businesses in San Diego were without power Saturday morning.

The power went out around 7:52 a.m. in parts of Hillcrest, North Park, Kensington, Normal Heights, University Heights, Old Town and Mission Hills, according to the San Diego Gas and Electric website. Callers told NBC 7 the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park also lost power.

Nearly 47,000 customers total were without electricity, according to SDG&E. The power was restored about an hour and a half later around 9:17 a.m.

The widespread outage was caused when the top of a circuit breaker fell off at a substation on Iowa Street and El Cajon Boulevard, according to SDG&E. The utility is investigating what caused the malfunction.
