Navy Budget Cuts: More Missiles, Fewer Sailors

The Pentagon will invest in more long-range, air-to-ground, and anti-ship missiles

The U.S. Navy's 2017 budget proposal calls for more missiles but fewer sailors.

In all, $8.2 billion will be trimmed from last year's balance sheet, creating a net loss of 6,300 sailors for the U.S. military branch.

The Navy will also purchase of one less lattoral combat ship like USS Coronado, which is home-ported at 32nd Street.

The Pentagon will invest in more long-range, air-to-ground, and anti-ship missiles than it did last year.

It is not yet known how the upcoming cuts will affect local bases.

In 2013, Navy-wide budget cuts created a more than $4 billion shortfall and resulted in the cancellation of ship and aircraft maintenance.
