Murder Suspect's Suicide Not the First Attempt: Report

Suspected killer Michael David Robles killed himself in his vista jail cell

The man who police believe killed Fallbrook mother Kathy Scharbarth tried to kill himself before he did so in a Vista jail cell in March, an autopsy report revealed Monday.

The report, first obtained by our media partners, the North County Times, says Michael David Robles attempted to hang himself with a telephone wire when he was first booked on suspicion of killing Scharbarth.

Kathy Scharbarth's family said they got a call from authorities this morning Michael David Robles had killed himself in the Vista jail on March 3. The San Diego Sheriff's Office later confirmed the death.

Scharbarth was reported missing on Thanksgiving, her body found the next day in Fallbrook. A medical examiner confirmed she was strangled to death.

The 43-year old Robles had pleaded not guilty to her murder, but initially told police about the incident. He was reportedly planning on pleading guilty to charges he faced in the week before his suicide, the examiner's report stated.
