More Children Fall Out of Windows During Heat Waves

Rady Children's Hospital treated 56 kids who fell out of windows last year.

At least two children were taken to Rady Children’s Hospital this weekend after falling out of windows.

The incidents are serving as a reminder for parents to take extra precaution when opening windows throughout their homes during heat waves.

“We have to remember that screens keep bugs out, but they don’t keep kids in.” said Marybeth Moran, an injury prevention program manager at Rady Children’s Hospital.

Officials at the hospital confirmed that 56 kids received treatment for injuries sustained after falling out of windows last year.

Moran recommends several cost-effective safety measures that can serve as a second level of triage after standard window locks.

Wooden dowels can be cut to length and taped along window tracks allowing for windows to open enough to let a breeze in, but not enough for a small child to fall out.

Fans can also be used to fill the space of an open window while also bringing in fresh air.

To be safe, beds and cribs should be placed away from windows so that accidents don’t happen while children jump on them.
