It's Ground Up for Mitt Romney's Oceanfront Home in La Jolla

Where Mitt Romney's oceanfront home once stood is now just a dirt lot.

An image taken Tuesday shows the progress in the Romneys' planned renovation of their home on Dunemere Drive in La Jolla, north of San Diego.

What once was a 3,000 square foot beachfront property with sunset views will soon become a home that's more than three times the size.

In the photo, some construction equipment sits on the dirt lot. The only thing that's recognizable from previous photos is a tall tree in the background.

San Diegans will remember the controversy that brewed over the former presidential candidate's plans to build on the coastal one-way street.

Neighbors, upset with the size of the project, appealed the family's plans to the California Coastal Commission. The board approved the build late last year.

The new 11,000 square foot home will include a basement that will have more square footage than the entire original home itself.
