Middle School Students in Chula Vista Get Sick From Laced Snacks

A 14 and 13-year-old were arrested for distributing pot-laced gummy snacks at school, the Chula Vista Police Department told NBC 7.

The teen boys were charged with transporting or furnishing marijuana while under the age of 18. The charge is an infraction.

A group of middle school students in Chula Vista became sick after eating the laced snacks, according to the school principal.

The incident occurred early Wednesday at Bonita Vista Middle School.

A spokesperson for the Sweetwater Union School District told NBC 7, some students who ate the snacks got sick to their stomach.

As a precaution, the school called ambulances because at the time it was unclear what substance the gummy bears were laced with. Those students are okay.

About five to six students gave out laced gummy bears to others, the spokesperson said.

District officials and Chula Vista police investigated what was inside the gummy bears and they believe it was a common type of marijuana edible.

Other students may face disciplinary action.

One parent told NBC 7, the scary part is not knowing what substances could potentially be inside certain types of food.

"It's like I told her, whatever you do, you get offered, nothing. Don't touch it. I don't want you to be one of those girls," parent Yvonne Alvarez said.
