A San Diego-based sailor who served as a K9 handler died Saturday from injuries he sustained while serving in Afghanistan.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael J. Brodsky, 33, of Tamarac, Fla., died July 21 of injuries he suffered two weeks earlier from an improvised explosive device.
The IED exploded July 7 in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan according to Navy Times.
Brodsky was transported to Landstuhl, Germany where his family was able to be with him while he underwent several surgeries.
Friends and family followed Brodsky’s progress through a Facebook page that was updated Saturday reporting that Brodsky had passed away.
The site has since turned into a memorial page with several images of Brodsky and his military working dogs.
Brodsky was assigned to the San Diego-based Navy Region Southwest Security Detachment since December 2010.
He enlisted in the Navy in 2001 and served overseas in Sasebo, Japan and Bahrain according to Navy Times.
