Escondido Meth Bust Forces Evacuation

An Escondido apartment complex was evacuated Saturday evening after police uncovered a methamphetamine lab operating inside a man's home.

Douglas Carmichael, 49, was taken into custody at about 7:30 p.m., and residents who lived adjacent to Carmichael's unit in the 1900 block of East Grand Ave. were evacuated until the Drug Enforforcement Agency could safely contain the premise.

Special Investigations Unit detectives seized an undisclosed amount of meth while acting on a warrant, said Lt. Chris Wynn of the Escondido Police Department.

Carmichael was charged with manufacturing a controlled substance.

Additional charges are pending, Wynn said.
