Authorities say a U.S. Marine has been killed and another is critically injured in a car crash in Orange County.

Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Ted Boyne says the vehicle struck a tree at a high rate of speed early Sunday in San Clemente. The man in the passenger seat died at the scene.

Two passengers in the back seat, also Marines, complained of only minor pain and were not hospitalized, Boyne said.

All four men are based at nearby Camp Pendleton. Their names have not been released.

Boyne says investigators are looking into the possibility that alcohol played a role in the crash.
