Marine ID'd in Fatal Rollover Crash

Cpl. Sylverson Moise died at age 24; second Marine seriously injured

A Miramar-based Marine who died Tuesday in a Yuma, Ariz., rollover crash that seriously injured a second Marine was identified Wednesday as 24-year-old Cpl. Sylverson Moise.

Moise, a New York native, was driving a Marine Corps tractor trailer without a seatbelt, according to the Yuma Sun, on Interstate 8 and the Ogilby Road off-ramp when the vehicle crashed at about 2:51 p.m.

The vehicle reportedly veered off the road, and its driver overcorrected and lost control, according to a California Highway Patrol official.

Moise was a semi tractor trailer operator who enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 2009. He was with the Marine Wing Support Squadron 373, Marine Wing Support Group 37, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, according to an official Marine Corps Air Station Miramar release.

Among Moise's listed personal decorations, he earned the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, and NATO Medal - International Security Assistance Forces.

The second Marine, who has not been identified, was airlifted to the Yuma Regional Medical Center and transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. His condition was not released.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
