The day the news broke that her estranged husband Arnold Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with a member of her longtime household staff, Maria Shriver did not shrink away into the darkness and instead made a very public appearance before thousands.

Shriver followed through with a promise to appear on the farewell Oprah Winfrey show at the United Center in Chicago Tuesday.

Shriver and Winfrey have been friends for 30 years and apparently she wasn't going to let a sex scandal ruin a crowning moment for the talk show queen.  Winfrey taped a two-hour star-studded event that included dozens of stars including the former first lady of California that will air next week. The Oprah show is going off the air after 25 years with a final episode on May 25.

Shriver walked on stage Tuesday night with Oprah's best friend Gayle King.

Maria Shriver issued a public statement Tuesday, but some would argue she has been speaking about it for months in the subtext of her online posts.

The three were all smiles as they embraced on stage.

When it was Shriver's turn to speak, she said that Winfrey had "given me love, support, wisdom and most of all the truth."

Nothing more was said that had anything to do with Shriver's marriage or her separation from the former California governor.

Last week, Schwarzenegger and Shriver announced they had separated. Tuesday the LA times broke the story that Schwarzenegger had fathered a child more than a decade ago.

Before her Oprah appearance Shriver released a statement asking for privacy and calling the scandal a "painful and heartbreaking time."
