Man on Active Duty Dies After Police Chase

A 22-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday morning after crashing as an officer attempted to catch up to him on Harbor Drive, according to San Diego Police.

The man was identified as a member of the military, though his name has yet to be released.

Police report the accident happened in the 2700 block of Harbor Drive outside a boat yard at about 1:30 a.m.

An officer attempted to stop the man near Cesar Chavez Parkway, but the motorcyclist crashed into guardrail and a sign about 30 seconds after the officer began pursuing after him, said Officer David Stafford.

The man died on the scene and his body was later turned over to the Medical Examiner's Office.

His name was being withheld until his next of kin could be told.

The reason as to why the officer pursued the man was not immediately known.
