Suspect Who Used Scissors to Rob Store Arrested

Tracy L. Odom, 39, is a former employee of the La Mesa store he’s accused of robbing on July 9

A suspect who allegedly robbed an AM/PM convenience store while armed with a pair of scissors was arrested Thursday, police confirmed.

Police said they took 39-year-old La Mesa resident Tracy L. Odom into custody. He’s accused of robbing the AM/PM store located at 4925 Spring St. in La Mesa on July 9.

Odom allegedly entered the store around 1:40 a.m. that day wearing a mask and threatened the clerk with a pair of scissors, according to investigators.

Clerk Daniel Sanderson thought the suspect was someone he knew at first and didn’t take him seriously.

β€œI thought it was a joke,” Sanderson told NBC 7 San Diego right after the robbery.

Odom fled from the store with a metal box containing petty cash.

Police recovered the cash box, mask, a pair of latex gloves and the scissors allegedly used in the crime a short time later.

Police said their investigation eventually traced the items to Odom, who’s a former employee of the La Mesa AM/PM store.

Odom was booked into San Diego Central Jail Thursday and is charged with one count of armed robbery. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
