Man Struck and Killed by Train

A 44-year-old San Diego man was walking along the train track near Pacific Highway and Washington Ave. when an Amtrak train struck and killed him.

It happened just before 6 p.m. on Monday. The train engineer saw the man on the tracks and blew his whistle and threw on the breaks deputies said, but the man apparently could not hear the approaching train.

The engineer told deputies he saw a man walking in a dark jacket walking northbound on the track as he approached the rail crossing. Investigators said he blew the bells and whistles as required by law at any crossing and when the man made no attempt to get off the track, he blew additional bells and whistles.

The Amtrak train was in the intersection of Washington Ave. and Pacific Highway when the man was struck. Deputies say the man was killed on impact.

Detectives are still investigating the incident.
