An East County man terrorized his neighbors with a shovel, smashing car windows and refusing to surrender to the authorities before being bitten by a police dog.

The suspect chased people with a shovel around 2 a.m. Monday in the 7700 block of Jamacha Road and smashed car windows police said.

At one point the man was inside his parents' home on the second floor and throwing items at officers who had responded to 911 calls.

He was subdued after a standoff with police where a police canine bit him.

An officer on the scene says the man appeared to be under the influence of some sort of drug.
