Man Who Died in Power Pole Crash ID'd

Police believe Albert Najera had some sort of medical issue

A truck crash into a telephone pole in Grantville Saturday left one man dead and several people trapped inside businesses by downed power lines.

The Medical Examiner's Office said an 80-year-old Albert Najera was driving his 1999 Toyota pickup eastbound in the 4300 block of Twain Avenue around 3:21 p.m.

Najera was coming from the Stadium Club when investigators believe he had some sort of medical issue, which caused him to hit two cars and a telephone pole.

Emergency crews tried to revive him, but Najera died at the scene.

The power lines attached to the pole fell onto a nearby building, and fearing to touch the live wires, several people became trapped inside the building's businesses.

SDG&E had to cut power to the scene before police could find a way to get people out. Some customers were without power until Sunday morning.

No other injuries were reported.

The San Diego Police Traffic Division will continue investigating the incident. They don't believe alcohol was a factor, although they say the man had one drink inside the Stadium Club.

The medical examiner has not scheduled an autopsy yet.
