A man was injured by a pole while working in Santee Thursday night.

Firefighters rushed to help the man, identified as Benjamin Smith, who was impaled by a pole in what appeared to be his lower back.

The accident happened in the 3500 block of Ellsworth Lane around 9 p.m. Thursday.

Smith said he was doing some work when he fell and landed on the pole. His 13-year-old son was home at the time and called 911.

Heartland Fire Department was called and they had to cut the pole to get Smith on the gurney.

He was conscious and alert when he arrived to Sharp Hospital.
