A man was hospitalized early Saturday morning after a physical argument outside a Mira Mesa convenient store concerning a taxi cab fare.

The victim, 39, pushed his 26-year-old friend at about 2 a.m. in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on the 8200 block of Gold Coast Dr., San Diego police said.

In response, the friend allegedly punched the man in the head, causing him to fall backward onto the asphalt.

The victim, who suffered "severe head injuries," stopped breathing, and a second friend performed CPR before medics arrived in relief, police said.

Officers detained the friend, who remained at the scene.

The victim's condition was not released.
