Investigators have learned the name of a man found burned inside a car in a remote area of Escondido.

LeRoy McDowell, 68, was discovered by firefighters after they extinguished a car fire on the eastern-most side of Lake Hodges along Highland Valley Road, just after 1 a.m. on Friday, July 16.

According to McDowell's obituary, he was a high school administrator in the San Marcos Unified School District.

San Diego police detectives are still investigating the incident and have called the fire suspicious. The fire was called in after someone noticed the car burning in a parking lot and called 911, police said. Once the flames were out, firefighters found McDowell's body in the driver's seat.

The site where the car was found was a dirt parking lot for the Evergreen nursery that runs along Highland Valley Road.
