A 59-year-old man died Monday morning after being shot by police at a San Ysidro apartment complex.
Officers responded to a hang up 911 call at an apartment in the 1100 block of West San Ysidro Boulevard at about 1:15 a.m. A man answered the door armed with a gun, pointing it at San Diego police officers, said San Diego police Lt. Paul Rorison.
Rorison said officers then retreated down a stairwell as the man followed, pointing the gun at least two officers.
That’s when three officers fired multiple rounds at the man. He was taken to Mercy Hospital and died there, Rorison said.
None of the officers were hurt, nor was a woman injured who also was inside the apartment.
Investigators are processing the scene and interviewing officers.
It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the 911 call.
Dispatchers heard voices in the background talking about a shooting, but officers had no idea the type of situation they were responding to, Rorison said.

“They didn’t know initially that they had an armed suspect at the (apartment),” he said.
