A man is under arrest after allegedly attacking his 69-year-old father with a samurai sword while he slept in his San Diego County home.
John Cahan, 39, is accused of barging into his father's bedroom in the 2000 block of Terrace Spiro Spring Valley at about 3 a.m. Sunday and rousing him from sleep. Cahan angrily demanded that his father hold out a hand so he could cut it off, according to sheriff's Sgt. Mark Varnau. After swinging the sword several times, Cahan connected with his father's leg, critically wounding him.
Investigators said the son left the room at that point, then returned to help his father to try stopping the bleeding. John Cahan called for an ambulance about 90 minutes later, claiming that his father had hurt himself while sleepwalking.
Cahan was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse. He is being held on $100,000 bail.
His father, whose name was not released, was listed in critical condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital Monday night.
