The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is still a couple of months away, but the kickoff breakfast for the event was Wednesday morning.

Approximately 900 people gathered amid a sea of red balloons for the breakfast in Mission Valley. NBC 7 San Diego is a proud sponsor of the Oct. 16 walk, which raises money for breast cancer research and outreach.

NBC 7 San Diego anchor Susan Taylor, whose mother had breast cancer and will be 13 years cancer-free in January, emceed the breakfast.

About 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the U.S, including 1,200 in San Diego. About 40,000 nationwide will die from it, according to the American Cancer Society.

Susan Webster was disagnosed with the disease four years ago.

"When you're overweight and bald, you don't really feel so good," Webster said, "and their program helps you put on makeup, just feel better about yourself and again connect with other survivors."
