2 Injured After Police Pursuit Ends in Crash

Two people were injured Friday night after a police pursuit ended in a crash in Logan Heights, officials said.

Police say the incident began around 7:45 p.m. when officers attempted to pull over an assault suspect driving a vehicle in the Mount Hope area.

Police say the suspect was driving a gray sedan when he hit another car in the 4200 block of Hilltop Drive. The man then got out of his car and allegedly assaulted the other driver with a pair of homemade nunchucks.

The suspect allegedly ran over the assault victim and then fled.

Officers tried to stop the car near Market Street and Gateway Center Drive but the driver sped off, entering southbound State Route 15, and a police pursuit ensued.

After a few minutes, police say the suspect crashed his car into a truck and road barrier on SR-15 near the Ocean View Boulevard off-ramp in Logan Heights.

Medics were called to the scene for at least two patients following the crash.

Police said the suspect was sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. His current condition is unknown.

The occupants of the truck were not injured. Police said the victim that was hit on Hilltop Drive prior to the pursuit was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries, but is expected to recover.

Police temporarily blocked the Ocean View Boulevard off-ramp to investigate the incident.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released. Check back for updates.
