Local Woman Shares Experience in Cuba on Night of Castro's Death

Among the crowd of people in Havana, Cuba who heard the news of former leader Fidel Castro's death was a woman from San Diego.

Cristina Picardi told NBC 7, she had been on her way to a salsa club with a friend when they received news of his passing.

“There were people crying through the streets. One guy was visibly balling. We thought he was yelling at us. He was actually just really upset," Picardi said.

Picardi says she was visiting Cuba for a dancing workshop but after the former dictator's death, she was warned not to dance. All nightclubs were closed and no alcohol was served as the country began its nine-day period of mourning.

“There was an eerie sense in the air. Like the day after Election Day and maybe a little bit of 9/11 where you're not sure what's happening, what just transpired," Picardi said.
