A suburban San Diego truck driver has been sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison for hauling about 10 tons of marijuana that was smuggled through a cross-border tunnel lined with rail track.

The driver, 31-year-old Carlos Cunningham of Oceanside, apologized Monday for his role in one of the largest marijuana busts in U.S. history.

U.S. District Judge Larry Burns imposed a sentence that was more than two years longer than what prosecutors recommended.

A tunnel that runs 600 yards under the border between Tijuana and San Diego has been discovered, along with nearly 30 tons of pot, according to U.S. authorities.

Burns says the 19,400 pounds of pot that was seized from Cunningham's truck in November was a staggering amount.
