A suburban San Diego truck driver has been sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison for hauling about 10 tons of marijuana that was smuggled through a cross-border tunnel lined with rail track.
The driver, 31-year-old Carlos Cunningham of Oceanside, apologized Monday for his role in one of the largest marijuana busts in U.S. history.
U.S. District Judge Larry Burns imposed a sentence that was more than two years longer than what prosecutors recommended.
Burns says the 19,400 pounds of pot that was seized from Cunningham's truck in November was a staggering amount.
